Advice for SCA Staff on Winter Driving
Last year's sudden flurry of snow, ice and plummeting temperatures caught the whole country off guard and brought many services to a standstill. If you need to take your car out, remember to stick to main roads wherever possible and drive only for as long as necessary.
Unfortunately, accidents happen, especially in challenging weather conditions. In the event of an accident, here's a summary of the key information to take down:
- Any witness details
- Driver's name and contact details, including address
- Any injuries
- Any passenger information
Breaking down is never fun but being unprepared AND out in the snow or rain is just a nightmare.
Winter is the season requiring the most care and preparation to stay safe and avoid a breakdown. Here are a few basic tips to make sure you have trouble free driving through the cold, dark months ahead:
- Antifreeze - Keep it topped up regularly and keep in your car for an emergency
- Battery - This is the most common cause of winter breakdowns. Keep this checked regularly and replaced if necessary
- Fuel - Keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delays
- Snow and Ice Survival Kits - These are invaluable if you get stuck during the winter months. Always make sure you travel with the following items - a fully charged mobile phone and in car charger, a blanket and/or warm clothes, a shovel, a pot of salt or sand, an ice scraper and de-icer, a torch and batteries and bottled water
