SCA says a big ‘thank you’ to volunteers

July 12th 2010

SCA Group and the Fenwick2 Health and Well-being Centre have held a celebration to say a big ‘thank you' to the many volunteers who give their time freely to others.

To mark Volunteers Week, a celebration event was held for ten volunteers at Fenwick2 in June (June 16). Flowers were presented by SCA Associate Director of Care Wendy Walsh.

"SCA Group would not be able to function as well as it does without the support of the many volunteers we have across the group," said Care Area Manager Joy Burton.

"They play a very important role in the day care centres in Southampton, in our community transport schemes and with the many projects at Fenwick2.  The time, kindness and caring that they contribute is very much appreciated."
Ann Sturgess, from Ashhurst, accompanied by her cousin Pat Osborne, helps out once a fortnight with the Fenwick2 assisted bathing service. With the use of a hydraulic bath they help people who are unable to bathe themselves due to disability, ill health or reduced mobility.

Ann is a former auxiliary nurse who worked at the Fenwick when it was a community hospital.

"People with limited mobility really appreciate having a bath," said Ann. "It means a lot to them. We had one lady who had not been immersed in water for four years and it was heaven for her.  We don't see old bodies, just a person."

Sylvia Dibben and Sandy Aylen are volunteer drivers who help transport elderly people to the Fenwick 2 Phoenix Social Club for isolated elderly people on Mondays.

"We pick people up and drop them off at home again at the end of the afternoon," said Sylvia, who is married to Fenwick2 League of Friends Chairman George Dibben.

"It makes an enormous difference. For some people it is probably the only time they go out in the whole week. They enjoy the interaction with others. They play mind games and quizzes and it helps keeps their minds active and aware. I get a lot out of it too. Some of the club members are lonely and it makes you feel quite humble."

SCA Group, one of the longest running social enterprises in the country, provides community care, day care, NHS dentistry, advocacy, community transport, social enterprise consultancy and health and social care training all across the south, on a not-for-profit basis.

SCA Group also runs the Fenwick2 Health and Well-being Centre in Lyndhurst and Wessex Care Decisions care advice and advocacy service.

Other ‘thank you' ceremonies are also being held for volunteers in other areas of the south.
