New CEO for SCA Group

May 17th 2010

SCA Group - one of the longest running social enterprises in the country - has appointed Maria Mills as its new Chief Executive (pictured below right).

Maria, from London, is a leading light in the social enterprise and charity sector.  She will take over the reins at SCA Group in August, replacing the current CEO and founder, the Reverend Brian Strevens.  Rev. Strevens will stay on as Executive President of the organisation on a part-time basis.

Maria is former Group Chief Executive and Company Secretary of the Novas Scarman Group, a social enterprise delivering support, health, culture, learning, work and community development for disadvantaged groups.

Specialising in support for homeless people, those with complex needs, families escaping domestic abuse and offenders, Novas was formed in 1998.  It expanded its work throughout the UK and Ireland and built up a turnover of £15 million.  Novas Group also won several awards, including the Howard League Outstanding Award for community offender services in 2008 and UK Charity of the Year in 2007.

A co-founder of Novas, Maria worked with the Group and its sister companies for 15 years, becoming Co-Chief Executive in 2005 and acting sole Chief Executive in early 2009.

Prior to this she was Director of Services and Deputy Chief Executive at the Refugee Housing Association, Regional Manager at Look Ahead, and Acting Director at the Cara Irish Housing Association.

Maria has also worked for Hexagon Housing Association, Hanover Housing Association and Brighton Council.  She is on the Board of Southwark College and is a Social Enterprise Ambassador for the Cabinet Office.

"SCA Group is delivering excellent services in health and social care. It is making a difference to communities and is innovative, entrepreneurial and forward looking," said Maria.

"Much of my work for Novas was at national level, so I am looking forward to working for a regionally-focused organisation.  I am excited about talking to service users, staff, partners and stakeholders about the services they want and their aspirations for the future.

"The next few years will be challenging because of the impact of the recession. I aim to build on SCA Group's success and to continue to deliver excellent services that really do improve people's lives."

Rev. Strevens, who is semi-retired, welcomed the appointment.

"We are very excited about the appointment of Maria Mills. This will bring a new skill set to our executive management team. It will help us to meet the economic and social challenges of the next few years and will enable us to broaden the scope of our continuing work," he said.
