Wessex Care Decisions

SCA launched Wessex Care Decisions in May 2010 to meet the lack of advocacy provision for older people in Hampshire.

We want to empower, enable and assist people to remain independent for as long as possible and we offer several types of service to do this:

Advocacy:

SCA opened up its team of professional advocates to take on private work from individuals who wished to self-fund an advocacy service. Advocacy is available to purchase at an hourly rate or in six or twelve week packages. All our advocates meet stict recruitment checks and are closely supervised and supported in their work.

Our team of advocates and advisors come from a wide range of backgrounds including nurses, teachers, counsellors, social workers, mental health professionals, housing officers and accountants amongst others. All of our team undertakes thorough induction training to ensure the highest professional standards are met.

Advocates can help with a wide range of issues; we have supported a number of clients with their move into more suitable accommodation due to their failing health and all the many things that need to be organised and put in place to ensure that this goes smoothly.

Our advocates are very experienced with power of attorney and we have found that many older people and their relatives either need help with their application or help with managing the situation once a power of attorney is in place.

An advocate can essentially be a second voice, pair of eyes and pair of legs to research the options, help you decide what you want and express those choices and wishes to whoever needs to hear them.

"My brother Arthur went into hospital and then a nursing home. It was a worrying time. One of his friends had been helping him organise the sale of his flat and his affairs but the relationship deteriorated and I felt I was not being properly informed about what was going on. The nursing home suggested that I should contact an advocate.

Before I found Lynne I phoned a solicitor and was quoted £400 just for organising Power of Attorney. Wessex Care Decisions has done all this for me for around the same amount of money. Without Lynne's help I don't know what I would have done. I have not had to do anything. Wessex Care Decisions is definitely a very useful service and is good value."

Watching Service For Long Distance Relatives:

When you live away from your elderly mother, father or grandparent it can be a real worry that you can't get to them quickly in times of need and be on hand when issues arise that need sorting out. The Watching Service is a unique opportunity to have a local organisation on hand to give you backup support when you can't be there yourself. We will not only be on hand to troubleshoot issues when needed but will also undertake regular drop-in visits to your loved one to ensure that their care needs are being met and they are not being neglected by those in charge of their care. We can also provide representation at care reviews if needed.

This service can be purchased by a monthly fee which will depend on the individual situation, the number of visits required and the number of expected call outs etc.

You can trust that we have the experience, credentials and professionalism to give you the peace of mind you desire.

Support and Guidance with Care Choices:

It can be a bewildering experience when you or your loved one needs to start looking at care and support services to help you stay in your own home. At Wessex Care Decisions we are able to support and guide you through the maze of services and ensure that you make informed decisions about the care and support that you purchase.

We will work on a one-to-one basis with you, in your own home if that suits you best, and help you decipher which services you need, where you'd like to purchase them from and how you go about it. In addition we can help you sort out your affairs so that your will, power of attorney wishes and care preferences are easy to hand and up to date should you need them in the future. Many people are in the situation where personal affairs are not in order and not up to date - this can cause a crisis situation should life and health matters take an unexpected turn for the worse. We can help you prepare for this possibility and ensure your rights and wishes are safeguarded.

In addition we can support you to choose residential care for yourself or a loved one, by providing you with independent guidance on what is available and even accompanying your visits to various homes to help give you an expert eye on the quality of the home and some tips and advice on what to look out for.
