Wellbeing Centres
SCA Care has six Wellbeing Centres (previously known as day centres), which provide fun, friendship, support and respite in a safe and accessible venue.
These community hubs are run by SCA Care’s team of trained professional care staff along with a team of volunteers. We have been running centres across the whole of Southampton for over 20 years.
Some of our centres are specifically for older people with dementia and the activities and support available is tailored to the needs of this customer group. The added value of these centres is the help and assistance they provide to the carers. Some centres run a supper club to enable carers to socialise and network with each other. These centres also have sensory gardens and sensory rooms to provide rest and relaxation or gentle stimulation for members of the centre.
Mrs B was referred to one of our wellbeing centres after having a stroke, which left her wheelchair bound. Our team at the centre coordinated with other professionals like OT and Physiotherapy departments, to ensure that Mrs B was given continuity and support. Our dedicated team of staff helped Mrs B with exercises and transferring techniques. Mrs B is now able to walk independently; she transfers to the centre, on and off the bus. Our wellbeing centre staff played a significant role in her regaining her independence and we are very proud of this.
We deliver our services to meet individual needs by working in partnership with our customers and their carers. All our services include the opportunity to participate in the following activities if you so wish:
• Social Interaction – a great opportunity to make friends and become part of a group.
• Mental Stimulation – through memory exercises, reminiscence projects and word and number puzzles.
• Physical Activities – such as gentle exercise classes, carpet bowls, movement to music and skittles amongst others.
• Arts and Crafts
• Entertainment – singers, parties, lectures and occasional lunches out.
• Information – outside speakers such as the Fire Service, Mobility Aids, Guide Dogs for the Blind and Trading Standards amongst others. All aimed at supporting people to continue to safely enjoy living at home.
• Nutrition – the provision of healthy hot meals and refreshments.
• Personal Care – services such as hairdressing and chiropody (where there is appropriate accommodation) or a comforting person to discuss problems with.
• Prevention – our staff have knowledge of, and links with, a wide network of local community services that we can put you in touch with.
"Attending the SCA Wellbeing Centre has given me peace of mind, the staff look after me well... I especially like the freedom of choice in that I can either join in the activities or just sit and read the paper."
