Here is a selection of issue-based advocacy cases that our team of advocates have completed:
Mrs D had three debts totalling £13,042, her husband had cancer – and was her main carer. Our Advocate persisted and got the banks to write off two debts and gained support from Mrs D’s lcoal MP to assist with cancelling the third. Our Advocate helped realign Mrs D’s finances and mediated between Mrs D and her husband to resolve the situation.
Mr F is a carer for his wife who has dementia, and severe hip problems. Mr F has support from their daughter and a neighbour. Mr F and his daughter had recently had a meeting with social services that had been acrimonious, it was suggested that Mr F’s wife would be taken into residential care compulsorily. Mr F felt that he could care for his wife better than a residential home and did not feel he should have to fund more care for his wife. Our Advocate supported Mr F through meetings with social services and consultation with a solicitor. Our Advocate also supported Mr F in meeting with a social services manager to complain about a particular social worker who had caused considerable upset. Mr F now continues as the main carer for his wife who now receives continuing care through the NHS. Social services have agreed to revise the arrangements for hours of care being provided.
Mr M was 90 years of age, and his wife had dementia and was living in residential care due to her aggressive behaviour. Mr M lived approximately 20 miles away and was struggling to continue to visit his wife every day, he was now visiting every other day. Mr M wanted her to move to a home closer and he did not understand the difference between client care contributions and top-up fees. Our Advocate has supported Mr M with the financial arrangements and making sure that his voice is being heard in the discussions about his wife’s care.
Ms M had moved to a new purpose built supported living home. She has Cerebral Palsy, mental health issues, anxiety and low self-esteem. She had problems dealing with her feelings as did her mother who was distraught about the new home and wanted her daughter moved. The OT felt Ms M needed support so our Advocate worked with Ms M and helped address care issues at various professional’s meetings. Some outstanding issues were resolved and this alleviated Ms M’s mother’s concerns. Ms M was able to tell her Advocate that she wanted to stay at the home. Our Advocate was able to state this for Ms M and she was able to continue to live where she wanted and with her mother’s support.
Making A Complaint:
Mr B has a hearing impairement and had been working for many years for a company but his job was ‘discontinued’. Mr B wished to complain. Mr B had also been asked to repay some Work Tax Credit which was said to have been overpaid but this was untrue – again a complaint was made by Mr B. Our Advocate gathered information, attended several meetings, and negotiated on behalf of Mr B. Eventually our Advocate sent the complaint to the the Ajudicator who agreed that Mr B had been treated unfairly as there was a ‘failiure to take into account Mr B’s level of disability’. Mr B had his liability writ
